Last week’s photo expose in Ocho Rios, sponsored by the Gleaner Company and Photo Express, was a massive success. Over 40 photographers converged on the resort town where they had a field day capturing activities as they unfolded, over a 24-hour period. Every aspect of life – business, tourism, nightlife, sports, dining – the good, the bad and the ugly, was captured and will be put in a journal to be published in the Gleaner on August 23. Resident were simply overjoyed at having the event, a pilot project to enhance the Gleaner’s community outreach programme held in the town and came out in their numbers to support the expose. Sue McManus and her team did a masterful job in assisting with the project and deserve several kudos. Spotted Daniel and Fitzroy Mier, Warren Hill, Barry Reeves, Kiran and Sanju Chatani, Andrew Grant, Sean Davis, Del Fong, Angella Melville, Neville Hudson, Vivene Duncan, Joe Issa, Devon Evons and Ron Vester.
Upscale attraction
Had a chat last Tuesday with Paula Thompson, Jamaica Tours and Excursions manager at SuperClubs about the quality resorts on the North Coast, and there are plenty. Ms. Thompson, who has been doing a fantastic job in providing visitors with great off-property experiences, noted that the local attractions, for the most part, are very upscale and could hold their own amongst the finest in the region.
Fund-raising project
The Ferncourt Old Students’ Association, a vibrant body of alumnus, has been doing wonders for their former high school. When it is not embarking on a feeding programme for student or providing computers for their classrooms and labs, the past student have been ensuring that Ferncourt continues on its pathway of excellence and remains an institution that provides quality education for its students. This week the hardworking group, led by journalist and Ferncourt alumnus, Devon Evons, will be embarking on another major fundraising project for the school.
Special treat
Stopped by the Fish House twice last week and as expected, the restaurant has taken off. Newly opened, the food is excellent and a treat for seafood lovers. Owner, Barry Reeves, has a winner on his hand and only has to maintain the quality to attract patrons.
Community outreach
Sandals Dunn’s River continues to assist deep rural communities. Over one hundred persons obtained free medical treatment at a clinic in Muirhouse, St. Ann, organized by the hotel and the St. Ann Senior Citizens Association last week.
During the clinic, persons were presented with clothes, toiletries, toys and lunch by the Sandals team. Bottles of dishwashing liquids and disinfectants, courtesy of Colgate Palmolive, were also handed out.
