First Joe Issa Scholarship to Campion boy

Lannois Asser Carrol-Woolery of Campion College, Kingston, is the first recipient of the Joe Issa Holy Cross/Jamaica Scholarship. The scholarship was officially launched yesterday by Senator Carlyle Dunkley, Minister of Education, at a luncheon at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston.

An idea of Joseph J. Issa, the scholarship was established to cement links between Holy Cross College, the New England Jesuits, and Jamaica. The scholarship is to be offered once every four years to ao less-privileged Jamaican student attending one of the two Jesult high schools in Jamaica, St. George’s College or Campion College.

The scholarship is so structured, it was said at the launching that the beneficiary would feel compelled to give something back to the Jamaican community and high schools that made the scholarship possible.

Lannois, the first recipient of the scholarship, was described as a “very deserving awardee” by Campion College’s headmaster Mr. John McKay. Lannois has, from 1st to 5th form, maintained yearly overall averages ranging from 85 % to 89%.

Aside from his academic excellence from first form which culminated in his gaining eight distinctions in his CXCGCE “O” level examinations, Lannois has participated in several extra-curricular activities. These include debating and ministry outreach. His impressive credentials along with his willingness to assist the younger members of the school community with their academic problems, have led to his being named Deputy Head Boy.

Mr. McKay said he was sure Lannois “will make Holy Cross sit up and take notice” and that he had confidence that he would make Jamaica proud.

In his address Mr. Dunkley praised the initiative of Mr. Joe Issa and said that similar partnerships need to be developed if Jamaica is to tackle the many challenges facing the nation.

Among those at the launching were His Grace the Most Revd. Archbishop Samuel Carter, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kingston, Mr. Douglas Orane, managing director of Grace Kennedy and Co., Mr. Ronald Thwaites, attorney-at-law, and Prof. Gladstone Mills.
