Holy Cross/Joe Issa Scholarship Fund launched

The Holy Cross / Joe Issa Scholarship Fund was launched in Ocho Rios recently. President of Holy Cross College, Father Michael McFarland Holy Cross Joe Issa Scholarship Fund - North Coast Times - May 26, 2001 outlined the terms of the Holy Cross / Joe Issa valued at fifty million Jamaican dollars over a ten year period, which would cover the tuition cost for one student, every year, for a four year diploma.  Students of St Georges College and Campion College are eligible based on need, scholastic achievement, leadership and social aptitude.

Recipients of the scholarship will be bonded for two years to work as teachers at the St George’s College.  Barbara Evans, chairperson of the fund said that the fund would undertake the cost of accommodation, books and incidental for the student recipients.

            In addition, Joe Issa executive vice-president of Super Clubs, who is a past valedictorian of Holy Cross College, informed the gathering about the local two year scholarships that were being awarded to the Holy Family Primary and Infant School, the Mandeville Primary School and the Ocho Rios High School.

Dr Doreen Falkner, deputy Chief Education Officer at the Ministry of Education expressed her approval of the Holy Cross/Joe Issa Scholarship fund and the role it will play in giving disadvantaged youths an opportunity to get a first class education. Dr. Robert Chen of SuperPlus presented a cheque of one hundred thousand dollars to the scholarship fund. The very talented Ocho Rios High School gave a splendid performance during the launch.  They performed several musical pieces for the guests who enjoyed them thoroughly.
